Fantastic picture and sound in a slick light unit with a lot of memory. by Paul Newman on 01/08/2009: I received 3 of these units in perfect order (well packed) via Air Mail to South Africa within 8 days of placing the order on the Chinavasion website on 31 December 2008. My interaction with Chinavasion during the order process was more professional than any dealings I have ever had with any other firm to date and the shipping proceeded far beyond my expectations. The Hot New 8GB Widescreen Player with 3 Inch LCD (for lack of a better name) is slim, compact and really really light. I wish I had an electronic scale to give you a figure. It is mostly plastic and that contributes to its light weight. It has no solid feel like the other metal-body units are sure to have, but the light weight also makes it really portable. It is really easy to hold, especially for younger hands. The finish is glossy black and silver with good build quality and nothing shabby about it at all. The screen is fantastic, crisp and bright. Photo viewing on it is a pleasure! It makes a really nice pocket photo album, especially with the 8GB memory. The scaling of the photos produces a fine image without scaling artifacts. The 3-inch widescreen format really is a pleasure to view. Viewing angles are not a problem. I have not yet tested the video playback enough to comment on it, nor have I tried video conversions and all that. The menu system is well worked out, with excellent looking default graphics and a pleasure to use. Connecting to the PC without installing any of the product’s software (Windows XP) was easy and as per user manual which came in good English. The stopwatch works fine but I could not yet wrestle any one of the 3 units away from my children to test the other features. Sound quality from the unit is fantastic! Although I do not have pro audio equipment to do formal tests (nor do I intend to). I am a graphics and video professional with 20 years experience and in my opinion can say that the sound and image are beautiful. Volume control is easy and gives smooth volume control. Switching the unit on after shutting down while playing resumes playback where it left off partway through the audio track. Lyrics work well if you have the LRC files. Sound quality from the built-in speakers (headphones unplugged) were surprisingly good. Why only 4 st
ars? The included headphones sound great but two of them already failed on one channel. These headphones really need prompt replacing (not a deal breaker). The buttons on the front of one of the units got stuck periodically although they do work. All the other side buttons work perfectly. The USB port on the same unit had one pin move out of place and caused the data connectivity with the PC to fail. A quick fiddle with a needle fixed that problem. I have not extensively tested charging times and battery life. Conclusion: I would say this unit delivers on what was advertised. I am only slightly disappointed by the button quality and USB pin problem. Overall I am pleased. What I like about this unit is that it does not resemble an iPod but is a fairly good product in its own right – classy looks, quality finish, easy to hold and carry, brilliant screen, fantastic sound, lots of memory and easy to operate.

Help answer the question about new gadget

why do you need to add extra hours of charging to a brand new gadget, IE cellphones?
like, my manual says before using it for the 1st time, you should charge it like, 6 hrs, when the regular charging time is normally 4 hrs. it says that if i did that it would have better life and etc. what is the explanation behind it? and what happens if i don't follow it?

If you are planning to purchase a secondhand laptop then this check list may save you much frustration. We are now seeing many secondhand laptops coming onto the market. Many of them at prices which make them most attractive as a second machine. These notes are intended as a checklist to help you avoid the proverbial lemon.

Laptop PCs may be offered for sale privately by the original owners or by dealers who have sourced a number of them from large companies. Large companies might typically update their employees’ laptops after a couple of years because the units were either under lease, out of warranty or it was cheaper to purchase new laptops rather than upgrade the software to operate with the latest company office network. Buying privately is attractive, as the owner should be able to provide the original manuals and software. Buying from a reputable dealer should ensure that you get some sort of guarantee if it should fail.

Whatever the reason for the sale, there are many useful laptops available and yes there is probably a number with a problem that the previous owner is not prepared to live with, or fix.

Many of the points are self evident but to miss them beforehand might be most annoying, if not expensive later. As with any product, an honest seller with nothing to hide should not object to your giving the PC a good work over, as it should do no harm and won’t even wear the tyres from a spirited test run!

Heres a whole checklist of quick, fast facts you might want to consider before you buy your next computer. Some are very common basic computer facts you probably already know; while others deal with more recent technologies and products that you should check or be aware of when buying your new computer.

What Type of laptop?

What processor: a 386, 486, Celeron, Pentium etc? As with the desktop PC the newer the processor usually the faster and better the performance, but note that contemporary tests of many laptops showed surprising differences in operating performance benchmarks among units of apparently similar specifications. A 386 may be useful for simple word processing under Win3.1, but typically such a machine would be inadequate to run WIN9x and its battery would probably be only a Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) with a shorter life compared with later battery technologies. Also early screen displays may be difficult to read in bright surroundings. A 486 with say at least 16 MB RAM could run Win9x. Later models have a faster processor that consumes more power so don’t necessarily expect battery life to be far longer on the newer models. If you only want to do minor editing of documents and don’t need massive processing power then a simple 486 or Pentium 100 with a couple of spare batteries and car adaptor might be ideal. Conversely if you want to listen to CDs, watch movies or demonstrate software then at least a 400 MHz (or better) processor will probably be necessary. Some laptops operate at a lower speed when running on battery to extend the battery life so be aware that performance benchmarks could vary between running on mains power or battery.

How Much RAM?
Random Access Memory is temporary memory your computer uses to run applications and data on your operating system. Generally the more RAM you have, the faster your computer will run. You need at least 256MB for Windows XP and Mac OS X. You need at least 1 Gig of RAM for Windows Vista but 2 Gigs or more will make it run smoother. However, 32-bit Operating Systems ONLY recognizes up to 3GB of RAM, while you need 64-bit systems to take full advantage of 4GB of RAM.

Extended Warranty?
Many manufacturers and retail stores will try to sell you extended warranties on any computer system you’re considering. These warranties can be expensive so it is up to the individual buyer whether or not to purchase them. It will depend upon your own resources but if you’re buying an expensive unit going with an extended warranty is a real option – especially when you consider replacement costs and the “peace of mind” such things supposedly brings.

How can I transfer my iTunes library to my new laptop?
I have all of my songs (168 songs) on my iTunes library on my older computer. I bought a new laptop (hP) and a new iPod nano.
I have lost my older iPod mini, but I have all of my songs on my iTunes library. The iTunes on my computer is an older edition, and the iTunes on my laptop is new (iTunes 7.3.2, I think,)
I tried plugging my new iPod nano into my older computer, but I got an error message saying that my new iPod nano was not compatible with the older edition of iTunes on my computer.
I tried to upgrade the iTunes on my computer, but it didn't work right.
I also tried to email my iTunes library to my new laptop using the 'Export' tool, but that didn't work, either. I got an error message saying that the iTunes on my new laptop couldn't find any of the songs that I sent.
What can I do? I really appreciate any help or advice that you guys could give. Thanks so much.
